What’s over there?!

If you’re also someone who also lives with anxiety, you can probably relate to how disarming it can be when it unexpectedly starts creeping into your day. For me, it doesn’t have a tendency to stick around like it used to, but it still occurs.

When anxiety shows up in response to something real, at least you can name it. You can work with it. But when it just appears, fully formed, it can almost feel more disarming that it has in the past. Am I okay? Was I already not okay and just not paying attention? Is this about something I haven't dealt with yet?

I think the hardest part is the unpredictability. You can build routines and coping strategies and do all the right things, and your body still just decides today is the day we panic for no reason.

In those moments I always do my best to ground myself. Try to reinforce all of the work I’ve put in to address these exact moments. Just like with anything else involving mental health, it has varying levels of success. The mere act of trying to reason with myself can sometimes be enough to help me calm down and relax.

🌑 Encounter

Beyond the door, the space opens up in a way that doesn't make sense for how deep underground you must be. The ceiling is lost in shadow. Columns of rough stone stand in uneven rows, some cracked, some leaning against each other like they gave up holding anything a long time ago. Between two of the nearest columns, something glints — metal, maybe glass. The floor here is dry and covered in a fine dust that records every step you take.

What will you do?

  1. Approach the glinting object carefully, scanning for traps — Gain 2 XP

  2. Study the dust for other footprints before moving — Gain 1 XP

  3. Stand still and let the silence tell you what's here — Gain 1 AP

  4. Grab the object and keep moving — Lose 1 AP

  5. Bump a leaning column — it groans and shifts, raining debris — Lose 2 HP

  6. Mark your path in the dust so you can find your way back — No effect
