Next week we travel to the east coast for the Unpub gaming convention to show off Rescue. I’m super excited to interact with folks and show off the game, but am finding I need to prepare myself for the amount of in person engagement I’ll be doing. Conventions, playtesting sessions, meetings with collaborators. All good things. All necessary things.
The challenge with in-person interaction isn't that I don't enjoy it. I do. I love talking about Rescue, hearing what people think, watching their faces when they figure out a clever pack combo. But there's a specific kind of energy required to be present and engaged with people for hours at a time, and I only have so much of it to spend.
I'm trying to prepare for it by planning downtime between events. Setting realistic expectations about how much I can actually handle before I need to disappear and recharge.
The tricky part is that the opportunities feel valuable and I don't want to waste them. Someone wants to playtest? That's feedback I need. A designer wants to connect? That's a relationship worth building. But if I say yes to everything, I'll burn out halfway through so not only do I need to prepare, but I’ll also need to pace myself.
We'll see how it goes.

🌑 Encounter
The staircase ends at a chamber where the air tastes like iron and old earth. A shallow pool covers most of the floor, perfectly still, reflecting the ceiling like a dark mirror. On the far side, a stone door stands slightly ajar. From behind it, you hear something — not quite breathing, not quite wind. The silence between each sound feels deliberate.
What will you do?
Crouch at the pool's edge and study what's reflected — Gain 2 XP
Wade through slowly, watching for movement — Gain 1 XP
Call out into the dark and listen — Gain 1 AP
Slam the door open before doubt sets in — Lose 1 AP
Step in too fast — water floods your boots and pulls at your footing — Lose 2 HP
Toss a stone into the pool and watch what happens — No effect
