“X” and write

A favorite tabletop mechanic of mine is the “do something” and write style. Typically, these are referred to as roll/draw/flip and write games, but they share many commonalities.

At a high level, these games involve some form of random input, like rolling a die or flipping a card from a deck. The random input usually provides a resource or determines what action you can take on your turn. After that, it’s basically an optimization puzzle.

The first game I ever designed and shared was in this style, called Cosmic Delivery, and it’s still free to play! I’m talking about this genre because it’s the foundation of what Daily D6 is built on and what it’s likely to become.

If this sounds interesting, check out some of my favorites in this style linked below!

Encounter: The Cavern

You descend into a cavern lit by faint bioluminescent crystals. The air hums with a low vibration — not quite sound, more like a feeling that settles in your chest. Pools of mineral-rich water bubble quietly, and you can see shapes moving just beneath the surface. The deeper you go, the warmer it becomes, until the ground itself feels alive.

What will you do?

  1. Touch the glowing crystal and feel its pulse — Gain 2 XP

  2. Collect a sample from one of the bubbling pools — Gain 1 XP

  3. Try to follow the faint movement beneath the water — Lose 2 HP

  4. Sit still and listen to the hum — Gain 1 AP

  5. Attempt to carve a crystal loose with your blade — Lose 1 AP

  6. Whisper a greeting into the cavern’s echoing halls — Gain 3 XP
