End of the month and a rolling river splits the map

My original idea for the adventure map and its tricky polyomino placement was mainly inspired by the game My City: Roll & Build. It’s a fantastic little game that my partner and I played through. It starts as a simple Tetris-inspired challenge to build a city. With each new chapter, a small twist is added to the rules. By the end of the campaign, you’ve traveled quite far from the original simplicity of Chapter 1.

What I loved most was the designer’s (the great Reiner Knizia) willingness to introduce a new element for a single chapter. It meant the game wasn’t just about building more and more, but about changing how you approached it entirely.

Understanding that the little adventure map here isn’t as feature-rich as the multiple chapters of My City, I thought it would be fun to share a bit of the inspiration behind these changes.

🌊 Encounter: The Sunken Ruins

You wade into the Sunken Ruins, where shimmering reflections ripple across broken archways and moss-choked statues. The air is thick with humidity, and each step sends gentle waves through the ankle-deep water. Somewhere in the dark, you hear the faint hum of forgotten magic.

What will you do?

  1. Examine the glowing runes on the wall — Gain 2 XP

  2. Search the water for hidden artifacts — Gain 3 XP

  3. Attempt to pry open a sealed door — Lose 1 AP

  4. Call out, testing the echo — Gain 1 XP

  5. Step into a deeper pool without checking its depth — Lose 2 HP

  6. Sit quietly and let the sound of water calm your mind — Gain 1 AP
