Beware the shiny trinket
It’s noon on Friday when this newsletter is hitting your inbox. I sat down with the idea, locked n’ loaded with the best of intentions almost two hours ago. Only after taking my dog for a walk, cleaning my desk, and answering some emails have I been able to focus on writing.
The gap between sitting down with the idea and hitting the keyboard isn’t due to a lack of interest. In fact, the hamster wheel of ideas is constantly spinning at a rate that could power a small city (albeit a hamster-sized city). I sit and ruminate on what I will write, how I’ll phrase it, and hope that it’ll border on coherent. All of this culminates in an immense amount of thought with little action, primed for something to steal my focus.
Having your attention grabbed by something shiny or easy isn’t a unique experience. I’m not alone in my midlife realization that the inability to focus is likely a direct result of an undiagnosed case of ADHD. Which seems all the more possible considering studies show an increase in diagnosed cases over the last two decades.
Sure, the tiny supercomputer I carry around in my pocket with endless access to content streams and games hasn’t helped. Listening to others share their experiences has helped though. It’s helped develop a greater understanding of how ADHD can manifest and create a feeling of community.
Learning more about how my brain works and what it’s chemically inclined to do despite my best efforts, gives me the opportunity to try and trick my brain. Whether that be through the Pomodoro technique to stay on task, or focusing on immediately rewarding tasks like doing the dishes to help me feel grounded.
This internal trickery is what sparked the idea for Daily D6. I wanted to find a way that I could trick myself into playing a game that is actually a to-do list. Surprisingly, slapping on a fresh coat of paint and promising myself sweet treats was enough to get the habit started.
