At what point in adopting a new habit do you feel you’ve succeeded? After three weeks? Six?
If you’ve read James Clear’s Atomic Habits (2018), you might be thinking of the two-month mark. It’s at this point that your brain is beginning to interpret this new routine as automatic, no longer requiring you to summit Mt. Effort just to perform the task.
I’d love to tell you that’s exactly how it works for me, but that wouldn’t be true. After weeks of deliberate effort, teetering on the edge of giving up, I finally hit the two-month mark. Success! The habit is mine, locked in, unshakable. Or so I think.
Wrong.
Despite months of effort, I inevitaly break my daily streak, thus beginning the Herculean effort of starting again. My default defeatist mindset kicks in, accompanied by the internal dialogue whispering, At least you tried.
Recently, I’ve been practicing a morning meditation, incorporating a mindfullness practice has helped me ease the busy brain and think clearly. All was well with the daily habit until I hit my first roadblock one month in, I slept in and skipped a day. Disaster.
What I’ve come to realize is that these daily streaks and habits don’t live or die based on whether you do them every day. They live or die based on whether you recognize the value they provide, and if you return to them when you need.
Despite skipping a day, I jumped right back on track the next day, waking up early and doing the practice. It's still tough to get back on track after stumbling. But I've realized that I put so much pressure on perfection—when in reality, no one else gives a toot whether my streak is flawless or not.
