Convincing myself it’s different
When you think you’ve got it all figured out (even if you don’t), life has a way of reminding you why routines matter. It’s a nudge back to the value of daily practices and the stability they bring; proof that “winging it” doesn’t always keep you grounded. I’ve often told my partner how I wish I weren’t so reliant on routine, but the truth is, it plays an essential role in helping me stay balanced.
🕰️ Encounter: The Forgotten Clocktower
While exploring a winding back road, you come across the ruins of an old stone clocktower. Its hands are frozen at midnight. A narrow staircase inside leads you to the top, where a brass panel reads:
“Set the hour that matters most. What you choose may echo forward.”
You turn the hands to dawn. As the gears creak, light streams through the broken roof, and you feel a sense of new beginning.
🏅 Reward: +2 XPYou set the clock to midday. A sudden warmth floods the room, and clarity washes over you.
🏅 Reward: +1 APYou move the hands to dusk. The air grows still, and you remember something you’d buried.
🏅 Reward: +3 XPYou try to force the hands backward. The mechanism resists, then snaps. The tower shakes slightly.
⚠️ Penalty: –2 APYou leave the hands at midnight. The chime rings once on its own, hollow and eerie. You leave uneasy.
⚠️ Penalty: –1 XPYou close your eyes and spin the hands at random. The clock ticks once, just once, and everything feels aligned.
🏅 Reward: +2 XP
